What is Adhan?

The word 'Adhan' means the call to prayer. It is an Arabic word. The Adhan is recited by a 'muazzin', a person who has the responsibility to call people to offer prayers for ALLAH. . Muazzin has to recite the Adhan five times a day; these prayer times are known as  Fajar, Zuhr, Asar, Magrib and isha.

The Adhan is called out from a mosque, usually from a special place called as the Minaret of the mosque. Once, the muazzin calls out the adhan, a second call of Adhan is made right before the aqama or aqamat; this means a call for the set up of prayers. Then, the Muslims line up in a formation to offer their Salah as prescribed by in Islam. While the adhan is a calling for the men to offer prayers in the mosque, women take the adhan as a calling for them to leave their chores and offer prayers at home.

Adhan holds a strong significance in the lives of Muslims. It is the first thing recited in the ears of a newborn baby; and often the first thing that is recited in times of grave sorrow and sheer happiness too. Adhan is actually a recitation to mention Allah's greatness. Adhan and its translation can be found in many Islamic books and is also taught in schools and in communities. Thus, it proves that Adhan is an integral part of the Islamic belief. Adhan provides a soothing feeling of security, relaxation and contentment to the Muslims who pray whole heartedly five times a day, with all respect and love for ALLAH.

Although there exists a vast population in the world which does not follow any religion, but Islam maintains its uniqueness as a religion that has widely spread across all borders. With the advent of Islam, it became crucial for the Muslims to find an appropriate calling for prayers; as this religion coexisted with many other in the region. The callings needed to be mesmerizing yet meaningful. After a long discussion, our Holy Prophet decided that a person should literally call out to the fellow Muslims for prayer gathering. Hazrat Bilal (raziallah taalah anho) was the first muezzin of Islam. Since then this custom became a significant part of the prayer system of Muslims. Islam stands on five dominating pillars, which encircles every aspect of a Muslim life. Salah is the second pillar and thus the adhan gets its significance from this fact too.
